Sacrum with five pairs of sacral foramina
نویسنده
چکیده
Sacrum is wedge shaped bone between two iliac bones forming posterior wall of pelvis. Normally, sacrum is generated by fusion of five sacral vertebrae constituting four pairs of sacral foramina [1]. At the cranial end of sacrum, there is fifth lumbar vertebra which when fused with the first sacral vertebra is known as sacralization of lumbar vertebra. Similarly at the caudal end, first coccygeal vertebra when fuses with the apex of sacrum, this process is known as sacralization of coccygeal vertebra. Both processes described above may generate additional fifth pair of sacral foramina [2]. The author came across a sacrum with five pairs of sacral foramina due to fusion of coccyx to the apex of sacrum. Case is reported for the variation in the anatomy of sacrum and its clinical implications among Indian population as it is less known variant.

Sacralization : Sacrum with Five Pairs of Sacral Foramina
Context : The sacrum generally is composed of five vertebrae fused to form a triangular bony mass with four pairs of sacral foramina. The sacrum may contain six vertebrae, by development of an additional sacral element or by incorporation of the fifth lumbar or first coccygeal vertebrae produces five pairs of sacral foramina. Sacralization is entirely undiagnosable without an X-ray examination ...
متن کاملConcurrent lumbosacral and sacrococcygeal fusion; a rare etiology of low back pain and coccygodynia?
BACKGROUND Sacrum is a triangular bone placed in the base of the spine and formed by the synostosis of five sacral vertebrae (S1-S5). Its upper part is connected with the inferior surface of the body of L5 vertebra forming the lumbosacral joint, while its lower part is connected with the base of the coccyx forming the sacrococcygeal symphysis, an amphiarthrodial joint. The existence of four pai...
متن کاملSacral Malformations - Implications in Sacral Nerve Stimulation
One of the most important steps of this technique is the correct topographic anatomic identification of the posterior sacral foramina on the body surface of the sacrum [6,7]. Although the sacrum’s anatomy is recognized to be highly variable. In the literature there are several studies regarding the variable morphology of the sacrum that also shows high incidence of sacral malformations, ranging...
متن کاملCT evaluation of acupuncture needles inserted into sacral foramina.
OBJECTIVE To use CT scanning to evaluate the precision with which acupuncture needles can be inserted into sacral foramina to establish sacral nerve modulation by electroacupuncture. METHODS The subjects were five adult women (mean age 71.6 years). These five cases were divided into two groups. In the first three subjects (group A) the intention was to insert acupuncture needles in the S3 and...
متن کاملSacral Insufficiency Fractures : How to Classify?
OBJECTIVE The diagnosis of insufficiency fractures of the sacrum in an elder population increases annually. Fractures show very different morphology. We aimed to classify sacral insufficiency fractures according to the position of cortical break and possible need for intervention. METHODS Between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2014, all patients with a proven fracture of the sacrum followin...
